Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist and card-carrying member of the so called Pictures Generation. Supporting herself as a designer at Mademoiselle and later a pictures editor at House and Garden and other publications, Kruger came naturally to her signature style of pairing found images and pithy text that paralleled the magazine format of her day job, seducing the “reader” to engage in her generation’s struggle for power and control. Kruger has participated in the Whitney Biennial (1983, 1985, and 1987) and Documenta 7 and 8 (1982 and 1987). She represented the United States at the Venice Biennale in 1982 and again participated in 2005, when she received the Leone d'Oro for lifetime achievement.

Kruger is represented by Mary Boone Gallery in New York.
